The St. Jude Dream Home was created in 1991 by Dr. Donald Mack, a pediatric physician from Shreveport, Louisiana. Jude Children's Research Hospital Board of Directors and Governors who has relied on St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to treat many of his young patients with catastrophic illnesses. The first St. Jude Dream Home was constructed in Shreveport and raised $160,000 for St. Jude.
Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. Today, the St. Jude Dream Home giveaway is one of the largest single-event fundraisers for St. Jude nationwide, which has given away over 590 homes and raised more than $550 million for St. Jude since its inception. The program includes 40+ St. Jude Dream Home Giveaways annually, which continues to grow. “We strongly believe in our responsibility to help others, and our entire De Young team is grateful to our community’s continued support of our business – which is why we are passionate about giving back.
No child treated at St. Jude or their family ever has to pay for treatment, travel, housing, or food. This year’s ticket sales will help cover treatment for six St. Jude patients. The treatments for pediatric cancer can last up to three years or more and cost on average $425,000, not including housing, travel, and food.
